Reknowned Indigenous author, journalist, and mentor Richard Wagamese has passed at the age of 61.

Wagamese’s most famous work was his 2011 memoir that reflected on experiences in the residential school system entitled “One Story, One Song.” The piece would win him the George Ryga Award for Social Awareness in Literature. In addition, Wagamese spoke at various universities, most prominently at the University of Victoria. Wagamese has been noted by other Indigenous authors in the British Columbia community for his commitment to mentoring a younger generation of Indigenous writers.
